Hospitals and Nursing Homes

As if to move with the times, several Namboothiri families, particularly those with Aayurvedam tradition, have organised internally and established nursing homes and modern hospitals. With the primary goal of treating people with infirmities and diseases, these have developed into institutions with modern facilities and management practices. Brief accounts on many such nursing homes and hospitals are given here.

1. ASWINI HOSPITAL

Though not a fully-Namboothiri-owned enterprise, the initiative to establish the Aswini Hospital at Thrissur in 1987 was taken by Dr C N Parameswaran (Cherukulam Mana). He is also the chief surgeon and Managing Director of the hospital. All modern facilities are now available there with 200 beds and over 30 doctors.

2. MANNARKAD NURSING HOME

Mannarkad is a small town about 35 km northwest of Palakkad. At a time when there was only one Government Taluk hospital in the town, in the 1990s, Mannarkad Nursing Home was started in a simple way by Dr. A M Raveendran, Attupurath Mana, Pulamanthole, and his wife Dr.Bhadra. Now the hospital has the specialities, Gynaecology, General medicine, Orthopaedics, General surgery, ENT, Paediatrics, Anesthesia and Casualty.

Now the hospital is run by a team of dedicated doctors and an excellent team of paramedical staff who are duty-bound and service-oriented. The hospital also has a well-equipped Laboratory and other facilities like X-ray and ECG.

The main attraction of this hospital is the cost of treatment. Many of the bigger and superspeciality hospitals are not affordable for the common people. But, in this hospital, excellent medical care is given at a very affordable cost and even poor people can approach without much fear about the financial burden.

Santhi Nursing Home, the first hospital in Punnayoorkkulam in Malappuram Dist., was started by Dr: K M Krishnan Namboodiri of Mannoor Mana. He was the first professional graduate of the area, and one of the very few who has degrees in both Allopathy and Aayurvedam systems of medicine.

This hospital which began functioning in 1980 in a humble way, is now a multi-speciality hospital with more than 15 doctors in the fields of General Medicine, Gynecology, Orthopaedics, Surgery, Paediatrics, ENT (including use of micro-surgery), Dental, Ophthalmology and Physiotherapy. The hospital also organises medical camps in collaboration with several hi-tech hospitals. It has 24-hour ICCU, Pharmacy, X-ray, ECG, and a diagnostic laboratory, which also has an auto-analyser.

The dedicated work of both Dr Krishnan Namboodiri and his wife Dr K P K Thampuran, played a major role in the ten-fold expansion of Santhi Nursing Home from a 5-staff, 5-room start to the present 50-staff, 50-room establishment. Their sons, Dr Rajesh and Randeep, and daughter-in-law, Dr Sreekala Rajesh are also with them now.

The Chief Physician and Managing Partner of the Oushadhasaala at Anandapuram (Thrissur district) is Ashtavaidyan E T Divakaran Mooss (b.1943) son of late E T Ravi Mooss of Thrissur Thaikkattu Mooss family. He studied Aayurvedam from his uncle Vayaskara N S Mooss. He is also the Chief Physician of Vedic Approach to Health of Maharishi Vedic University, The Nederlands. His son, E T Ravi Mooss (b.1974), who took his degree in Aayurvedam from the Tamilnadu Dr M G R Medical University, Chennai, is working under his father.

Vaidyaraj prepares almost all kinds of Aayurvedic medicines using most modern equipment with a high production capacity. From the collection of herbs to the bottling, special attention is paid to maintain the purity and quality of the preparation which are exported too. High quality raw materials and abundant water are available in the vicinity. The Research and Development Department has been constantly engaged in preparing medicines to cater to the specific needs of the people.

3.1. DHANWANTHARI VAIDYASAALA

Dhanwanthari Vaidyasaala of Thodupuzha, established in 1932, has now been serving well for over 70 years in the production and marketing of Aayurvedic preparations. Vaidyan C N Namboothiri of Chovveli Illam had performed "Upaasana" and offered prayers for three years to Lord Dhanwanthari in the Vishnu temple of Kolaani, after getting his education and medical training in the ancient "Gurukulam" style, under Madham Sreedharan Namboothiri. He then started a small production unit for Aayurvedic medicines in Manakkatt. He used to carry the daily preparations as head-load to the Thodupuzha Temple vicinity and sell them there. His courage to found such an enterprise in a backward area at that time is certainly praiseworthy.

His advertisement of "Chyavanapraasam" during 1940 caught the attention of people and helped in popularising his products. Soon he started packaging of the products and distributing them to branches located in the major towns. By 1950, the Vaidyasaala grew to about 50 branches and a hundred agencies, including out-of-state branches in Chennai, Kovai, Bangalore and Delhi.

The ten-day 1957 festivities to celebrate the silver jubilee were inaugurated by the then Chief Minister, E M S Namboodiripad. Even in this competitive field, the Vaidyasaala grew using new marketing and sales strategies. Timely supply of the preparations to the branches created confidence in the market and among the customers.

Unlike in many other production units where boilers and electrical and mechanical devices and equipment are increasingly being used, Dhanwanthari still uses traditional methods with earthen pots, bronze "Charakkus", etc., except for rare purposes. This has helped to maintain the quality of the medicines.

This 300-million establishment has now 25 employees. Dhanwanthari Vaiyasaala celebrated its Diamond jubilee in 1992.

4.  NARAYANEEYAM  HOSPITAL

The Narayaneeyam Vaidyasaala, as it was known then, was established in 1919 in Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district by Aayurvedaachaaryan Kalady Narayanan Namboodiri. His father, Agnisarman Namboodiri was an expert in Vedam recitation and was known as "Kalady Othan", and his mother came from Vaazhakunnam Mana. His grandfather had performed Somayaagam and was known as Vasudevan Somayaaji. His brother, Chrikitsa Choodaamani Agnisarman Namboothiri was a well-known Aayurvedic physician and had been awarded "Pattu and Vala" (a shawl and a golden bangle, like the present-day awards of a plaque and a certificate), by the Mahaaraaja of Mysore.

Renamed as the Narayaneeyam Hospital in 1995,  it is now run by  Chikitsaarathnam Dr. Parameswaran Namboodiri, of the same Vedic and Aayurvedic ancestry. He holds a B Sc, BAM, MD (Ayur), and a Ph D degree awarded for his research thesis, "Role of High Density Lipoproteins in Diabetes Mellitus".

The Hospital concentrates on examining and treating patients in the Vaidyasaala itself. The doctor, like his father, does not suggest any treatment without actually seeing the patient. The Hospital does not have branches.

Dr. Namboodiri has published a book, "Aayurveda Lekhanangal" (articles) and used to run columns on health in newspapers and TV. In 1997, he was awarded the title "Panchakarma Kulapathi", and in 1998, the "Chikitsaarathnam".

5. OLASSA DHANWANTHARI VILASAM  AYURVEDA VAIDYASALA

Family Background
Chirattamann Illam, one of the Ashtavaidyan families, used to be at Angadippuram in Malappuram district. The family temples - one for Dhanwanthari and one for Sivan - exist there even now. As much as in Ashtaanga Chikitsa, the family members were adept equally in the treatment of elephants.

During Tippu Sulthan's invasion of erstwhile Malabar (1788 AD), the family moved out like many others and sought asylum under the Mahaaraaja of Thiruvithaamkoor, who obliged and made him the court physician. After a few years at Maruthorvattam near Cherthala, an Illam was built and land given to them at Olassa near Kottayam, and thereafter the family came to be known as Olassa Mooss. They looked after the health aspects of the Namboothiri participants in the six-yearly Murajapam until the last one held in 1954.

WHY "CHIRATTAMANN" ?
It is said that the Ashtavaidyan family, "Chirattamann", literally meaning "coconut shell-soil", got that name as a result of the successful treatment of an elephant.

Once, the handsome he-elephant belonging to a local chieftain was afflicted with a serious swelling which could have turned out fatal. None of the local physicians were successful in treating it. And then Mooss was sent for and brought. He suggested surgery and they made the necessary preparations. Mooss asked his disciple to make the medicines needed to be applied after the surgery. But when the time came, he was not to be seen, and Mooss was in a fix. He filled some soil in a coconut shell, prayed to his family god, Dhanwanthari, and applied it on the open wound where the elephant was operated upon. To everyone's surprise, the wound healed and the elephant got well.

The known family tree dates back to one Ravi Mooss (b.: 1789 AD or 964 ME Kumbham), son of one Parameswaran Mooss. Ravi Mooss had nine boys and nine girls (!) and later, the family was connected through marriage to most other Ashtavaidyan families. The fifth son, Narayanan married from Nagaru Illam in 1860 at the age of 38, when all his brothers died. Since all the later first-born sons were named Narayanan, they are sequentially numbered one, two, and so on.

Narayanan Mooss - 2 (1861 - 1912) had special expertise in identifying signs of approaching death. The then Mahaaraaja of Thiruvithaamkoor had given him a "Veera Srimkhala" (a kind of medal of honour). Narayanan Mooss - 3 (1890 - 1961) served as an honorary Aayurvedam Director of the Government of Thiruvithaamkoor during 1938 - 44, and has a large number of disciples. His third child, Parvathy Devi was the first lady doctor who studied and practised Aayurvedam. Narayanan Mooss - 4 (b.: 1936) studied Aayurvedam under his father, while Narayanan Mooss - 5 (b.: 1964) took his BAMS degree from Vaidyarathnam Aayurveda College, Ollur.

Vaidyasaala
The Olassa Dhanwanthari Vilasam Ayurveda Vaidyasala was establisahed in 1928 by Narayanan Mooss - 3 and has branches at Kottayam, Alappuzha and Cherthala. Medical formulations are manufactured in the Vaidyasala and marketed. They do not maintain a medicinal plantation. Narayanan Mooss - 4 now runs the Vaidyasala and is assisted by his son Narayanan Mooss - 5.

8. THRISSUR TAIKKATT MOOSS' S N A OUSHADHASALA

Thrissur Taikkatt Mooss family is one of the reputed Ashtavaidyan families practising Ayurvedam for many decades. The fame of the family shot up during the period of Unni Mooss, who was accepted as a physician even at a very young age. In 1920 he established an Aayurvedic manufacturing unit at Kizhakkumpattukara in Thrissur known as S N A Oushadhasala as a memorial to his father Narayanan Mooss. S N A Oushadhasala, considered to be one of the oldest Aayurvedic manufacturing units in Kerala, has completed 80 years of service in the year 2000.

Ashtavaidyan Taikkatt Narayanan Mooss was an experienced physician, poet in his own right and a scholar in Sanskrit. He wrote more than 10 books in Sanskrit and a text "Sindoora Manjari" on Aayurvedam, describing the preparation and use of "Sindoorams" and Suddhi Kramams of various drugs.

9. VAIDYAMADHAM VAIDYASALA AND NURSING HOME

Vaidyamadham : Vaidyamadham is one of the famous Ashtavaidyan families in India. The name Vaidyamadham means the abode of physicians. Many of the members of this family were the official physicians for some of the royal families of Kerala.

Ashtavaidyan Vaidyamadham Valiya Narayanan Namboodiri (1882 - 1959) was well-known for his astonishing skills in diagnosis and simple and effective treatments. He was also an expert in detecting "Maranalakshanam" (the signs of imminent death) and in predicting the exact time left for the patient. He started the Vaidyamadham Vaidyasala and Nursing Home in 1912.

Valiya Narayanan Namboodiri was a confident and daring physician of his times, for he brought many complicated treatment methods back into practice. One such treatment method was "Kudipraveshikam" - a treatment to arrest the ageing process, which, surprisingly was known to ancient India.

Ashtavaidyan Vaidyamadham Valiya Narayanan Namboodiri (1912 - 1988), the father of the present chief pysician was a legendary figure in his lifetime itself. Unlike his father, he travelled extensively through the length and breadth of the country to deliver lectures on Aayurvedam and to partake in discussions and seminars pertaining to the improvisation of various treatment modalities cited in the Aayurvedam texts.

The last Kudipraveshikam in the history of Aayurvedam was performed by him some five decades ago on Poomully Vasudevan Nambudiripad. It was supervised by his father and assisted by the son. The honorary title of "Vaidyasastra Mahodadhi" was conferred upon him by Sree Sree Kanchikamakoti Matthadhipathi Sree Jayendra Saraswathi Swamikal, for his outstanding contributions to Aayurvedam.

Apart from Aayurvedam, he had thorough knowledge in Sanskrit, interests in Karnatic music, Katahkali, Natyasaasthram, etc. Being a versatile genius, he commanded high respect from every walk of life.

Ashtavaidyan Vaidyamadham Cheriya Narayanan Namboodiri the present chief physician of the family, expanded the Vaidyasala and Nursing home, initiated research on cancer and developed a herbarium. Treatment for arthritis is considered his speciality.

He is a well-known Sanskrit scholar and he has written several articles on Aayurvedam in the leading journals. Vaidyamadham has a rare collection of manuscripts and books on Aayurvedam.

Subrahmanian Namboodiri, Dr V N Brahmadathan Namboodiri (Director of Ayurveda, Government of Kerala), Dr V N Hrishikumaran Namboodiri and Krishnan Namboodiri are the other famous physicians of the family. Neelakandhan Namboodiri, Dr V N Vasudevan and Dr V N Prasanna, children of Cheriya Narayanan Namboodiri, are also Aayurvedic physicians.

NURSING HOME : The Nursing Home is set amidst peaceful sylvan surroundings. Engulfed by the soothing foliage and medicinal plants, the nursing home is a haven for those seeking mental and physical relaxation.

The in-patient department of the nursing home started functioning in 1978, initially with six rooms. This was further expanded to the present 20 rooms. The rooms are equipped with facilities for treatment, bathing and cooking. Specially trained attendants take care of the practical aspects of the treatment. Guests and an attendant are allowed to stay with the patient.

All type of treatments including complex treatments like "Panchakarmam" are done here in the traditional style.

VAIDYASAALA : The Vaidyasaala, consisting of the production and sales units, was established on a small scale in 1912. Gradually it was expanded to meet the growing demands. Though the production is partially mechanised, each medicine is prepared strictly according to the texts, keeping intact both the letter and spirit behind every cure. At present more than 700 varieties of medicines are prepared. A few preparations according to the formulae derived by Cheriya Narayanan Namboodiri are also manufactured.

HERBARIUM : A beautifully landscaped herbarium is being developed to cultivate rare medicinal plants and herbs. More than 100 species are being grown here presently.

Beautiful cottages built in the traditional style is also planned inside the herbarium. These well-equipped cottages are meant for tourists and other persons interested in getting acquainted with the sublime vastness of Aayurvedam.

10. VAIDYRATNAM OUSHADHASALA - A PROFILE

The Eledath Thaikkattu Mooss family of Thaikkattussery, a hamlet south of Thrissur, is one of the most prominent among the Ashtavaidyans, and have been practising Aayurvedam for several centuries. Their fame shot up in the middle of the 19th century by the legendary work of two illustrious brothers, Neelakandhan and Ittiravi. Ittiravi's sons, Narayanan and Divakaran, added more feathers to their family's glory. In recognition of his meritorious services, Narayanan Mooss was decorated with the title of "Vaidyaratnam" by the Viceroy in 1924. It was for the first time that this title was conferred on a physician from Kerala.

Neelakandhan, the only son of Vaidyaratnam Narayanan Mooss, founded the Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala at Thaikkattussery to perpetuate the fond memory of his illustrious father. This organisation has grown over the years and has today earned global reputation in the quality of its products. Apart from the Oushadhasala, a Nursing Home, a College and a Research Centre have sprung up at Thaikkattussery under the banner of "Vaidyaratnam".

In recognition of his dedicated service to the society, the Government of India conferred the "Padmashree" title upon E T Neelakandhan Mooss in 1992. His son, E T Narayanan Mooss, an eminent physician and philanthropist, is the present Managing Partner of this organisation.

Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala : The Oushadhasala at Thaikkattussery was formally inaugurated in July 1941. The primary aim was to make good quality medicines available to the patients who came for treatment. The institution soon became famous for product quality which boosted the demand. Production facilities were increased in stages to meet the increase in demand. A modernisation of the process in 1995 involved replacing the conventional firewood heating by steam heating for preparing the medicines. The second phase of the modernisation is on the anvil.

Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala (Pvt) Ltd.: The Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala (Pvt) Ltd., a sister concern of Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala, was established at Chuvannamannu near Peechi in 1990 for the bulk preparation of Aasavams, Arishtams and Kashaayams. Apart from these, four patent medicines, Swaasaamrutham (an effective cough syrup), Vaidyendu (a pain balm), Ropaani (an ointment for healing cuts and wounds) and Paanaamrutham (a powder for flavouring boiled water) are manufactured here. A herbal garden is also maintained at Chuvannamannu.

Sales Network : All medicines manufactured at Vaidyaratnem Oushadhasala and Vaidyaratnam Oushadhasala (Pvt) Ltd. are marketted through the 15 outlets of the former and over 400 agencies in Kerala. There are also branches at Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi, and stockists all over India. An agency is now functioning at Dubai.

Vaidyaratnam Nursing Home : The Nursing Home offers Panchakarma treatment strictly in accordance with tradition, and has now a capacity of 27 beds. Patients from far and wide, including a large number from abroad, are undergoing treatment at the Nursing Home. In order to meet the increasing demand, a new block is being built.

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College : Started in 1976, the Vaidyaratnem Ayurveda College contributes 30 qualified Aayurveda doctors every year. There is a 150-bed, well-equipped college hospital at Poochunnipadam.

Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Research Centre : Research and development form the backbone of every branch of science.  The Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda Research Centre was inaugurated by the then Vice-President of India, Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma in 1991, to commemorate the Sathaabhishekam (84th birthday) of Padmashree E T Neelakandhan Mooss. The centre has plans to carry out research on the treatment of Asthma and other diseases as well as development of new medicines.

R & D Laboratory : Globalisation of Aayurvedam demands adoption of scientific methods to substantiate the action of Aayurvedic medicines. Also, identification of genuine raw drugs, standardisation of medicines and development of newer drugs have necessitated the need for an R & D laboratory. Such a laboratory has been set up and has already earned the much coveted recognition from the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India. Only a few Aayurvedic companies enjoy this recognition. The R & D Laboratory has an eminent scientist, Dr V Velayudhan Nair who retired as a Post-graduate Professor of Pharmacology in Ayurveda College, Thiruvananthapuram.

The Vaidyaratnam group, with its service history of almost six decades, today occupies a prominent position in the Aayurvedic map of India.
